In 1905 the Vienna Secession club offered the Beuron monks-artists to exhibit their works at their new building in Vienna. They wanted to reserve one room, which would act as a sort of chapel. Beuron Abbot Placidus Wolter selected Jan (Father Willibrord) Verkade to go to Vienna to determine whether it is appropriate for Beuron artists to exhibit with such a "questionable association" as the Viennese secessionists were viewed. The exhibition was a phenomenal success, with over 10,000 visitors within the first two months. The Beuron artists would go on to exhibit in Aachen in 1907, in Dusseldorf in 1909, and in Regensburg in1910. In 1912 the second international exhibition was organized in Brussels. The exhibition was repeated during the centennial anniversary of the Vienna exhibition in 2005 at the Beuron monastery though not in as large a format; in 2008 it was moved to the Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe, Germany. |
